THE TOWN WHERE I LIVE

Hello again!
This is an example of a composition which one of you wrote (I've made very few changes). You can see it's not so difficult, you can do something like this. The only thing you must do is control basic mistakes from previous levels and use new structures and vocabulary.
REMEMBER:

• you must always use the subject
• normal sentence order is: SUBJECT + VERB + OBJECT + COMPLEMENTS
• adjectives go BEFORE nouns: There's a wonderful church and they DO NOT have plural (I saw three tall men)
• don't forget the final -s in plurals and for the 3rd person singular in the Present Simple
• we only use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, with "I", days of the week, months, names of people/places...
• avoid repetitions using pronouns: I live in Valleseco, it's a nice small town
• and please... DO NOT MAKE MISTAKES FROM NB1 (like+ing, a/an, present and past tenses, pronouns...)
• revise your spelling

QUANTIFIERS

Look at these tables to see the different quantifiers we use in English:

Uncountable nouns	Countable nous	Other
HOW MUCH water do you drink?	HOW MANY people were there?
A LITTLE (and that's OK, I don't need more)	A FEW (and that was enough)
I drink LITTLE water (not enough, I think I should drink more)	There were FEW people (not enough, e.g. the party was boring)
I drink ENOUGH water (sufficient)	There were ENOUGH people (sufficient, just the right number)	I'm tall ENOUGH to play basketball
I don't drink MUCH water (negative sentence)	There weren't MANY people (negative sentence)
I drink A LOT OF water	There were A LOT OF people	He eats A LOT.
I drink TOO MUCH water (more than necessary)	There were TOO MANY people (more than necessary)	I'm TOO tired I'm going to bed.

Going HERE and THERE....

 Here are some phrases and expressions to help you give directions in English.

1. Excuse me. Is there a post office near here?

2. Can you tell me how to get to Picadilly?

3. Where's the bus station?

4. How do you get to the nearest museum? 

• Yes. There's one right across the street.
• Sorry. I don't live around here.
• It's on the corner of 1st Avenue and Pine Street. Next to the bookshop. 
•  
• Go straight down this street for two blocks. Turn left when you get to South Street. Stay on South street for half a block. You’ll see it on the left.
• 
  
• First, go down/up/along this street for three blocks…
•  
• Then, turn left/right at the traffic lights.
•  
• After that, go straight on Simon Street until you get to the supermarket.
•  
• When you get there, turn left/right again.
•  
• Then, take the first turning on the left. Walk straight on for about five minutes.
•  
• It's on your left, next to the coffee shop/ between the bank and the library.
• You can't miss it!

REMEMBER:   Infinitive or -ing?

When to use the infinitive

1)    1)   after certain verbs:
- forget, help, learn, teach, remember
- expect, hope, need, offer, want, would like
- agree, pretend, promise
- allow, can/can't afford, decide, manage, mean, refuse

• Don’t forget to lock the doors.
• Mark needs to leave early tomorrow
• Why do you want to learn English?
• We can't afford to go on holiday this year.
• She's decided not to call him again

2)    2)    after adjectives, for example:
- good, glad, happy, pleased, difficult, easy, sad, surprised, impossible

• I was happy to help Tom.
• She will be surprised to see you.
• Is it easy to speak Italian?

This includes too + adjective:

• The water was too cold to swim in.
• Is your tea too hot to drink? 

3) Infinitive of PURPOSE (why?)
  

• I went to the bank to get some money.
• We phoned the restaurant to book a table.
• Sharon left the room to go to the toilet.

When to use -ing

   1)   When the word is the subject of a sentence or clause:

• Swimming is the best exercise.
• Doctors say that smoking can be bad for you.

2)    After a preposition:

• I look forward to seeing you again.
• Jane left without saying "Goodbye."
• He is awful at telling lies

3)  3) After certain verbs:
-hate,  avoid, dislike, enjoy, finish, give up, mind/not mind, practise

• I hate getting up early.
• Would you mind opening the window?
• I enjoy not doing anything 

**Some verbs can be followed by the -ing form or the infinitive without a big difference in meaning: begin, continue, hate, intend, like, love, prefer, propose, start.

• It started to rain = It started raining.
• I prefer to stay at home = I prefer staying at home
• I like to play the flute =I like playing the flute.
